Ask anyone outside of Seattle about Seattle hip-hop and the conversation will end quickly and promptly with declaration of Sir Mix a Lot. It is a shame really, because a small revolution is occurring in the fair area of the 206, spurred on largely by the socially aware and friendly styles of the Blue Scholars. But it isn’t all like that. The two MCs of Cancer Rising spit anything and everything over the beats of DJ Tiles One. A little bit of that 206 flavor, a little bit of crunk, a little bit of rock, and a whole lot of fun, Cancer Rising is the life of the party, even if you don’t know it yet.
“Evryday Bidness” is a track off its brand new self-produced, self-titled EP.

It is funny how rapping white people that don’t constantly reveal their street cred (ala Slug) constantly are dubbed emo-rap. Emotional rap? Sure, why not. But Grieves in no way has his bangs cemented to his forehead, or else do you think Mr. Lif would hop on board this track? Grieves is yet another rapper hailing from the 206 who brings a down to earth style, very accessible, but also very smart. From what I hear, he also makes all his own beats.

Die! Die! Die! will soon be releasing their sophomore effort, Promises Promises. Apparently, they like repetition. As a hodge-podge of everything, Die! Die! Die! has been compared to Sonic Youth and Black Flag. Check out their first single off their upcoming album.
Crime in Stereo - …But You Are Vast

Crime in Stereo had an impressive run as one of the better melodic hardcore outfits coming out of NYC, and then it signed to Bridge 9 Records, a label more known for the brutality of its mosh riffs more than anything else. “Is Dead” was a huge step back in the realm of hardcore, but showcases the bands musical talent and songwriting skills much better. It is one of my top 10 albums of the year and “…But You Are Vast” shows how much more mature Crime in Stereo has become, expanding on the generic label of melodic hardcore.
Gallows - In the Belly of the Shark

Gallows is to UK Hardcore what The Sex Pistols were to UK Punk, raw, gritty, and angry. Only this time around, Gallows injects a pure and fine rage, bursting through the seams with vicious breakdowns. Its debut album “Orchestra of Wolves” came out last year and the band is still touring relentlessly in support.

Holy Fuck are a lot of things. One of the best new live bands. A band that can never name any of its albums. A band that seems like a cheap knock-off of LCD Soundsystem but is so much more. Electronica based largely in improvisation, Holy Fuck is a paradoxical outfit that has released one of the best albums of the year, its third self titled release. Holy Fuck - Holy Fuck, if you will.
