Yip-Yip has shared stages with such entertaining acts as HEALTH, Melt Banana, and the Locust. Not that their music sounds like any of these bands, though. They are all about spastic electronic music that is, more likely than not, inspired by old-school video games. Yip-Yip does play more than just keyboards, surprisingly; their songs do include the use of real saxophones and organs, despite the fact that they sound as though they were born 100% from stock keyboard noises. To come for Yip-Yip is a cover of Nirvana’s “Very Ape,” which will be featured on a split 7″ record, out May. This 7″ will feature covers of Nirvana bands by six different bands, and it will be self-released to basically… avoid trouble. Cautionary words for what Nirvana fans should probably expect.

Holy Fuck are a lot of things. One of the best new live bands. A band that can never name any of its albums. A band that seems like a cheap knock-off of LCD Soundsystem but is so much more. Electronica based largely in improvisation, Holy Fuck is a paradoxical outfit that has released one of the best albums of the year, its third self titled release. Holy Fuck - Holy Fuck, if you will.

Yaaay!!! Genghis Tron just finished its new album! Outside of owning one of the best band names ever, Genghis Tron brings about an uncompromising blast of cybergrind. Fueled just as much by a maniacal metal rage as synthesizers and drum machines, the band is able to seeth destruction without sounding like some sort of cheap gimmick. Genghis Tron is hitting the road with the almighty Dillinger Escape Plans in what no doubt will be one of the loudest shows of the year (and next if it stretches that long).

I think when you are in a band, certain things can be a sign that you are going in the appropriate direction. For Akron/Family, backing Michael Gira’s band Angel of Light on your first tour can be that sign. Despite sharing the record label of Devandra Banhart, the group supposedly universally known for launching the “freak-folk” genre, Akron/Family has formed its own loyal cult following. Akron/Family has toured relentlessly the past couple of years, and in that process, released two albums. The newest “Love Is Simple” might be the most consistent to date. It still doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it is some of the happiest music around. Check it, small tour as well, do yourself a favor…

An amazing Mutemath performance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show last night. Certainly backwards music videos are nothing new at all, but backwards performances are pretty new. Now, I was confused at first because I thought they were MOVING backwards, but in fact, they are not. The clip is played in reverse, but the members still had to learn the roles and do the tricks accordingly. I’ve loved Mutemath since the first second I accidentally came across them at a show two years ago, and I’m thrilled that they’re finally getting the attention that they deserve. We’ll be interviewing them this Saturday with more details on the performance!
For your shits and giggles, here are some streaming Mutemath tracks, courtesy of music conglomerate Warner Brothers.
